Thinking of Dante

Midway on life's journey, I found myself
In dark woods, the right road lost. To tell
About those woods is hard––so tangled and rough

And savage that thinking about it now, I feel
The old fear stirring: death is hardly more bitter.

-From The Inferno, Canto I, Lines 1-5,
Robert Pinsky translation

Those Dore etchings are always amazing to look back on.

I am these days reading The Divine
Comedy, the blank verse translation
by Lawrence Grant White, published
in 1948 by Pantheon. It has 69
Dore etchings (photos of) in it,
including the one you show. As
Adam said: "amazing". Am finding
some of what Dante wrote rather
erotic.
