Good Luck Guaranteed

Liam and I just finished making a big pot of black-eyed peas (b.-e.'d peas, green onions, cilantro, garlic, basil, diced ham shanks, two shiny dimes for two lucky boys). All part of a good-luck New Year's dinner.

I am trying to make up a bit for our disastrous Christmas non-dinner.

I bought a ham shank, but when the time came to put the black-eyed peas in the crock pot, I opted for a vegetarian version, with dried peppers, tomatoes, herbs and zuchinni from last summer's garden. It was good. The ham shank went into the freezer, awaiting a time when we're hungry for meat.

I'm sure the folklore about ensuring enough money in the upcoming year by eating black-eyed peas on New years Day is based in part on the idea of eating and living humbly. My college student kids ate eagerly, hoping to curry favor with the financial aid gods.
