Great Essay by Dan Gerber

Poetry Daily links to an interesting essay by poet and novelist Dan Gerber:
The most common and certainly the most difficult question I might be asked by a stranger on an airplane is, “What is your work about?” It’s a conundrum for any artist. And I suspect the one single quality that may peg one as an artist—as opposed to, say, a craftsman—may be the artist’s inability to form a satisfactory answer.

Greg, thank you for linking to this.
My answer usually starts with, "Duh..."

Mine, too.
Greg, have you read his new book ... Primer something?
Keith:
Yes, I have read the book: A Primer on Parallel Lives (Copper Canyon Press, 2007). It is very, very good. Dan is actually a good friend of mine--has been for almost 20 years. But for him, I doubt if I would be writing at all today.
It is the first question always asked, as if the interrogator needs to know what pigeonhole to press you into so they can complete their brief and quick evaluation. I always say my work is about language, and smile sardonically.
