Congratulations, Genius!

Congratulations to poet and short story writer Stuart Dybek, who has just been named the recipient of a $500,000 "Genius Grant" from the MacArthur Foundation. Stuart taught for many years in the MFA Program at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, and was always an inspiration to Michigan-based writers.

I enjoyed "Streets In Their Own Ink." http://taliatulledge.blogspot.com/2007/08/streets-in-their-own-ink-by-stuart.html

But a $500,000 grant? Is that taxpayer money? (Sorry, I just can't help myself). At least it went to a poet I like...otherwise it would really be a shameful waste.

The money is from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, not from the government. The money is paid to the recipient over 5 years, at $100,000 per.

When you stop and think about it, $500,000 isn't THAT much money. A good heart surgeon who has practiced 35 years or-so might make twice that amount a year, every year. An actor might get $10 or $20 million for six weeks worth of work in one movie.

An award of $500,000 only seems like a lot of money in the writing world because we are USED to being paid in copies of the journals we publish in, not in real dollars.

That is true. But an extra $100,000 this year would pay off all of my debts including mortgage and student loans, would be a nice amount of start-up for my husband to open up his dream car lot...

Maybe I'll just work hard as an English teacher and hope someone nominates me as a genius.
